Our Work
Creating vibrant and healthy communities that care for themselves is both the challenge and the goal that we work toward every day. We recognize the tremendous hardship Community Health Centers face by providing care for some of our most vulnerable populations, often with the most limited of resources.
To that end, HPCA delivers a significant level of technical support, project management, and public advocacy on behalf of Community Health Centers. We also deliver great value to our members: for $1 we receive in membership dues, our members receive over $1000 in direct benefits.
Advocacy
Creating and sustaining partnerships with the health care community is an integral part of our daily work. By leading or participating in initiatives on behalf of Hawai‘i’s health centers, HPCA ensures that the needs of vulnerable populations and communities are represented.
We also take an active role in developing productive relationships with legislators and policymakers, and are a constant presence at the Capitol during the legislative session to ensure that essential health care issues are addressed.

Technical Assistance and Training
To help Hawai‘i’s Community Health Centers manage the complex, rapidly changing business of health care, we manage a variety of information technology, clinical quality, and workforce development projects that provide direct technical assistance to health center staff.
By working with the doctors, dentists, nurses, and administrative staff who actually do the work at health centers, HPCA ensures that those who need training and technical resources the most are helped. We also produce an annual conference each year that brings over 200 health care professionals and advocates together to address our most pressing community needs.
For more information, see Technical Assistance.
Planning and Development
We regularly collect and distribute data about the Hawai‘i health care environment to aid health centers, public health administrators, legislators, and other organizations to develop strategic plans. We also use this information to help provide guidance for our advocacy efforts on behalf of vulnerable populations.
The most recent primary care report was published in 2006 and can be accessed in our Resource Library.
We will be publishing a Community Health Center growth and access report in Fall of 2010. To receive notification of when this publication becomes available, sign up for our newsletter or email bulletins here.
Funding
We work diligently with state legislators, our federal congressional delegation, and the state administration to ensure that Hawai‘i’s Community Health Centers receive adequate funding for the difficult work they do. HPCA manages (or passes-through) numerous grants to health centers and administers a variety of state contracts that provide resources to CHCs. In FY2009, HPCA distributed nearly $1.7 million on behalf of health centers, and the total funding and goods for CHCs that resulted from our advocacy efforts totaled $85 million.
